SMEJ's began in 1997 as a convenience store at Center Mall, serving employees and customers with snacks, drinks, toiletries, and other essentials for fifteen years. During this time, owner Marty Rosenstein simultaneously pursued his passion—selling and displaying collectible and unusual candy items that hinted at the specialized direction his business would eventually take. The store's name carries deep family meaning, derived from the Rosenstein family itself: S represents Sam, Marty's father who passed away in 1996; M stands for Marty, who runs the store; E honors Ethel, Marty's mother who passed away in 1997; J designates Jan, Marty's sister who helps manage operations. This wasn't just branding. This was legacy. April 2012 marked a pivotal decision. Marty closed the Center Mall location, choosing to change directions entirely. After many hours researching products and locations, SMEJ's reopened November 1, 2012—transformed. No more toiletries or general convenience items. Only candy, snacks, and beverages, with heavy emphasis on nostalgia products designed to transport customers backward through time while simultaneously introducing them to the newest specialty items hitting markets.
